We all have assumptions. If we’re not aware of these assumptions, they can creep into our assessment of the people we encounter and unknowingly (sometimes negatively) influence our behavior. This can be problematic for volunteer managers who are attempting to attract and retain a diverse volunteer base or for volunteers who interact with diverse populations at your organization. This presentation will discuss the importance of cultural competency, identify how to check our own biases, stereotypes and stigmas, and help prepare volunteers to support those served by your organization.
